Havelock, founded in 1890 along the Burlington & Missouri River Railroad, has always been a bustling hub of activity. By 1900, it had a population of 1,500 and a thriving economy centered around the local Burlington Shops. Despite Lincoln's expansion, Havelock fiercely maintained its independence until finally joining the city in 1930 after a prolonged strike. Today, Havelock retains its historic charm, with vintage facades, locally-owned businesses, and a sense of community that’s hard to find elsewhere.

The Charging Station – Where History Meets Modernity

The Charging Station, named to honor Havelock’s industrial past and its own electricity theme, is a testament to the district’s resilience and innovation. The space they currently occupy was previously used to house a utility company. The coffee shop was born out of a unique partnership between Alec Calzada and Precision Lighting & Electric. Alec envisioned a space where people could “charge up and chill out,” blending the old with the new in a setting that feels both familiar and fresh.

Inside The Charging Station, you’ll find a blend of vintage and modern elements. The first floor features 111 vintage light bulbs hanging from the ceiling, various seating options with outlets and every table, and the innovative Honor Bar. A touch-screen Kiosk allows customers to order and pay for drip coffee digitally, letting the hard-working Americans skip the line and get to their meetings. For those who prefer a more traditional and personal experience, the bar counter, handmade by Alec and dads from a local church, offers personalized service from skilled “coffee craftsmen.” who are also certified baristas. 

A Community Hub

The Charging Station is more than just a coffee shop; it’s a community hub. Upstairs, there’s a conference room, a loft seating area with a skylight, and old church pews, adding to the shop’s atmosphere. Alec also plans to renovate the staircase to resemble a train car, further tying into Havelock’s railway heritage. Boldly, the entire coffee shop and its conference room are available to the community entirely for free to use for private events, and many folks are filling up the calendar already. 

From California to Nebraska

Alec and his wife moved to Nebraska from California with their 3 children, driven by a sense of faith and adventure. They quickly found a welcoming community in Lincoln, particularly through the Catholic Church. Despite their initial reservations, they now proudly display former Nebraska’s slogan, “Honestly, it’s not for everyone,” and agree that Havelock is the perfect place to invest in.

Alec’s vision for The Charging Station extends beyond serving great coffee. He hopes to help Havelock evolve into a “Haymarket 2.0,” offering a curated, niche experience that draws people in and showcases the district’s unique character.
