People agree that moving is one of the most stressful experiences in life. This is especially true if you haven't moved in a long time and have a lot of stuff that needs to get from point A to point B.
How can you pack up your kitchen without worry that all of your dishes will shatter? How can you make sure that your television screen doesn't get cracked?
These are common concerns when moving to a new house, but there are some simple steps to take so that you have peace of mind!
If you have fragile items that you want to pack but aren't sure where to start, keep reading below to find out what you need to know.
What Are Common Fragile Items When Packing?
Fragile items in your home are the items that are most likely to break if packed incorrectly during your move. Some of the things that you want to be most careful with include:
- Dishware
- Technological accessories
- Instruments
- Collectible items
- Antique items
- Televisions or computer monitors
- Artwork
- Mirrors
- Delicate structures (e.g. small statues, plants, etc.)
It's a good idea to make a list of the items that you have that may be prone to breakage during the trip to your new home. This way, before you even start packing, you know how many fragile items you have and can plan ahead.
The Best Way to Pack Fragile Items for Any Move
If you have heavy fragile items, you should use smaller boxes. They are easier to carry and will allow for less space for the item to shift around as it is being moved. Don't use weak boxes; invest in heavy-duty or thick boxes so that there is no give.
Use extra tape on the bottom of the box and inside the box, layer an extra piece of packing material (like bubble wrap or towels). You can also add dividers for glassware.
Always pack the heaviest items you have on the bottom with the lighter fragile items on top.
Wrap each item you have individually and secure the wrap with tape. Be sure to also fill hollow items, like vases or planters, with packing paper or newspaper. Take your time doing this!
Label these boxes clearly on the outside so that you or the movers know fragile items are inside.
Some Other Packing Tips to Remember for Your Move
Before you even start packing your first box, you should buy all of the items you need. This will include all of your boxes, packing materials, tape, markers, and labels. Do this after decluttering or deciding what you don't want to take with you.
This way, you'll be able to buy in bulk to save some money. If you have extra left at the end, you can use it for your next move, gift it to someone else that is moving, or use it for arts and crafts projects around the home.
Additionally, when you finish with a box, give it a very gentle shake to see if any of the items move inside. If you hear movement, it means that there is too much space, and you may need to add bubble wrap or newspaper to fill the gaps completely.
If you have items that are not fragile that you want to pack together, you can also use bubble wrap to separate a box. Simply place those items together and add the bubble wrap around the entire box on the inside to keep it all together.
