According to a recent NAR research report, baby Boomers Overtake Millennials as Largest Homebuying Generation.
Baby boomers have now overtaken millennials as the largest generation of homebuyers, according to a new report from the National Association of Realtors®. The report, which examines recent homebuyers and sellers across generations, found that the combined share of younger and older boomer buyers rose to 39% in 2022, up from 29% the previous year. In contrast, younger and older millennials' combined share fell from 43% in 2021 to 28% in 2022.
First-Time Buyers
The report also found that first-time buyers comprised 26% of all buyers, the lowest since NAR began tracking the data. Generation Z, ages 18 to 23, now makes up 4% of homebuyers, with 30% of those buyers moving directly from a family member's home into homeownership.
Purchasing Homes Through a Real Estate Agent
Overall, buyers moved a median of 50 miles when relocating, up from 15 miles the previous year. The report also found that 86% of all buyers purchased their homes through a real estate agent, with younger boomers (ages 58 to 67) and Generation X (ages 43 to 57) being the most likely to use an agent.
